What is Halotherapy?
Halotherapy, or Salt Therapy, is a natural, relaxing way to relieve the irritating symptoms associated with skin and lung conditions. The therapy involves exposure of your sinuses, lungs, and skin to a controlled environment containing a fine, near-invisible mist of pharmaceutical grade dry-salt air for 30 minutes. This dry salt air compliments established medical treatment of airway and skin conditions and, in some cases, can also be used as a stand-alone therapy. The salt has been shown to help the body loosen trapped mucus and impurities, decrease inflammation, and kill bacteria; as well as help the body heal irritated mucus membranes from conditions such as sinus and chest congestion, allergies, and cystic fibrosis, and skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. Depending on the severity of the condition, 2 or 3 sessions in the first week may help to overcome acute symptoms, tapering off sessions as needed. An additional benefit of sitting in a room full of heated Himalayan salt is a “negative ion” effect that seems to give clients a sense of calmness and well being.

In 1843 Felix Bochowsky, a Polish Physician, was the first to mention the benefits of natural salt mines because he realized that the salt mine workers he treated had very healthy respiratory systems. Since then, natural salt mines were utilized to naturally treat respiratory ailments. To this day there are working Hospitals throughout Europe in natural salt mines. This treatment method is called Speleotherapy.
In the 1980s, however, intensive studies in Eastern Europe were conducted to determine the therapeutic factors of natural salt mines. Prof. Dr. Chervinskaya, the founder of Halotherapy and a team of scientists concluded that dry salt aerosol is the main therapeutic factor of natural salt mine climates. With this knowledge, it became a possibility to re-create this microclimate above ground.
Different attempts to produce dry salt particles were not successful and, as a result, Halogenerators were developed to provide dry salt particles in saltrooms. Halogenerators act much like a mill, grinding salt into .3 micron size particles and with the ability to blow therapeutic amounts of salt into the salt therapy room.
In 1990, the Russian Ministry of Public Health sanctioned Halotherapy /Dry Salt Aerosol Therapy as valid medical treatment, based on data collected from 15 Russian hospitals (from 1991 to 1994). Over 4,700 patients both adults and children have been evaluated with various types of pulmonary diseases with a high success rate.
Around 1991, when the Soviet Union fell, Halotherapy was introduced to the rest of the world! In the early 2000s, it was introduced into the Health Spa sector and is spreading rapidly through Europe and North America.
